| | Dear Music Lover, Back in the college radio days of the 80s, I used to say I was into "alternative" music. I first got into Echo, the Cure and Joy Division. I went to see them in concert (well, New Order instead of Joy Division), along with Thin White Rope, Game Theory, Green on Red, Vomit Launch, 28th Day, Downsiders, Rain Parade, Flaming Lips, Swans. But I was also into psych/pop bands from the 60s such as the Animals, Byrds, Turtles, Doors, Moody Blues, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Velvet Underground, Orphius, Buffalo Springfield, Fairport Convention... And the country singers Waylon Jennings, Sammi Smith, Cal Smith, Tompall & the Glaser Bros, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Bobby Bare... The singers Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee. And Leonard Cohen. I could go on and on, namedropping. The point is, the term alternative begs the question: alternative to what? Alternative, mostly, to the empty, uninspiring corporate beats that blast from from today's "hits radio." Beyond this wasteland, there is so much good music. I hope you will find some of it here.
